... is what I WANTED to call it, but my brother ~amascusmage insisted the archaic version would be too obscure on top of the play-on-words. For those of you who are NOT familiar with the original mythology surrounding our holiday pumpkin carving hobbies... allow me to explain! Originally it was "Jack-O'-the-Lantern" ... or "Jack the Lantern", even "Jacky Lantern" ... which according to the folklore, was another name for a "Will Of the Wisp" or "Will-O'-Wisp" an eerie glowing spirit which misguided humans into pitfalls or dangerous bogs. They led folk astray for the fun of it! The carving of pumpkins, according to SOME legends, was to distract the spirits and keep them at bay. A pumpkin with a scary face for Jack-O'- Lantern. |
